Nostalgia Alert: ‘Scooby-Doo’ Live-Action Series in the Works

The iconic theme song “Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?” is set to resound once again as fans of ‘Scooby-Doo’ eagerly await the potential live-action series based on the beloved Warner Bros. IP.

According to Variety, streaming giant Netflix is in the process of developing ‘Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series’, with writers Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg at the helm. The one-hour drama project is reportedly nearing a deal at the streaming platform, featuring a script-to-series commitment. While specific plot details remain shrouded in mystery, it’s confirmed that the series will draw inspiration from the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

Warner Bros. Television is set to produce the series, building on their recent collaboration with Netflix on the “Dead Boys Detectives” series. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will not only serve as writers but also executive produce alongside Andre Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner. The project will also see executive production from Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions, which currently holds an overall deal at WBTV. Jonathan Gabay of Berlanti Productions and Adrienne Erickson will co-executive produce.

The ‘Scooby-Doo’ franchise, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, has been a beloved part of pop culture since its inception in 1969 with the debut of the animated series ‘Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!’ under Hanna-Barbera, later absorbed into Warner Bros. Animation.

While this Netflix endeavor marks a new venture into live-action territory for the Scooby gang, it’s not the first time they’ve made the leap. The 2002 live-action film ‘Scooby-Doo’, starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, alongside Neil Fanning as the voice of Scooby, was a box office hit, grossing over USD 250 million worldwide. Its sequel, ‘Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed’ in 2004, continued the success, raking in over USD 180 million. Additionally, the franchise has seen live-action TV films and a wide array of animated projects over the years, captivating audiences of all ages.

As fans eagerly anticipate the return of Mystery Inc. in this new live-action adaptation, the announcement of ‘Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series’ promises to reignite fond memories and spark excitement for a new generation of sleuths and Scooby fans alike.
