April 20, 2025: British actress Olivia Williams, known for her standout roles in The Crown and The Sixth Sense, has opened up about her deeply personal and painful journey with pancreatic cancer — a diagnosis that came after years of being dismissed by doctors across three countries.
In a candid interview, Williams revealed that she was diagnosed with VIPoma, a rare neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas, but only after enduring a frustrating four-year period in which 10 different doctors misdiagnosed her condition. Her symptoms were repeatedly attributed to lupus, perimenopause, and other ailments, and at one point, she was even referred for a psychiatric evaluation.
“If someone had f–ing well diagnosed me in the four years I’d been saying I was ill… then one operation possibly could have cleared the whole thing and I could describe myself as cancer-free, which I cannot now ever be,” Williams told Deadline.
Her story sheds light on the broader issue of delayed diagnosis in cases of pancreatic cancer, which is notoriously hard to detect in its early stages. By the time her condition was accurately identified, the cancer had already metastasized. Williams has since undergone multiple surgeries to remove the tumor and affected organs and is now receiving targeted internal radiotherapy as part of her ongoing treatment.
Now advocating for greater awareness, Williams is lending her voice to Pancreatic Cancer UK, a charity she’s supporting as part of this year’s TCS London Marathon. Her goal is to push for better early detection methods — especially an affordable and accessible test — that could dramatically improve outcomes for others facing similar challenges.
“I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m looking for a cheap, early test,” she said, adding emotionally, “This is where I get emotional,” as she spoke about the importance of vigilance and education around the disease.
Through her advocacy and openness, Williams is not only raising awareness for VIPoma and pancreatic cancer but also inspiring others to keep pushing for answers when their health concerns are dismissed.
