‘Oo La La Le O’: Vijay Mallya Finally Reveals the Origin of Kingfisher’s Iconic Jingle That Lived Rent-Free in Every 90s Kid’s Head

June 7, 2025: If you grew up in the ’90s or early 2000s, chances are you’ve unknowingly hummed one of India’s most iconic jingles: “Oo la la la le o…” Synonymous with Kingfisher ads and IPL cheer, this catchy tune still sparks nostalgia. But have you ever wondered where it actually came from?

Well, the man behind the tune, liquor baron Vijay Mallya, just spilled the beans in a candid podcast appearance with YouTuber and entrepreneur Raj Shamani.

“You remember, ‘Ooh la la la le le oh’? When was this conceived? You don’t know,” Mallya teased before revealing the jingle’s origin story. “Back in 1996, I put the Kingfisher logo on the West Indies cricket team. Why? Because their personalities—fun, dancing, music—their swagger suited the Kingfisher brand. That’s when the jingle was conceived,” he said.

The anecdote quickly went viral, with fans taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane. One user wrote, “Man made men happy. Thank you, sir, for Kingfisher.” Another fan chimed in, “The King of Good Times knows marketing better than most analysts.” Comments like “Some ads are unforgettable” and “Every kid used to sing this back then” flooded the post.

During the same podcast, Mallya also made headlines for hinting at a possible return to India. When asked if he’d ever consider coming back, he said, “If I am assured, absolutely I will. I will think about it seriously.”

Mallya has been living in the UK since 2016 after Kingfisher Airlines collapsed, leaving over ₹9,000 crore in unpaid loans. Though Indian authorities continue to pursue his extradition over allegations of financial fraud and money laundering, Mallya’s appearance—and his jingle’s backstory—reminded many of a different era altogether: one filled with cricket, charisma, and unforgettable tunes.
