Strong bones and pain-free joints are not built overnight — they are shaped by everyday choices. An experienced orthopaedic surgeon, Dr David Abbasi, has shared five common habits he has personally given up after years of treating joint injuries and mobility problems.
Drawing from his clinical experience, he explains that many seemingly harmless routines can quietly damage musculoskeletal health over time.
1. Sitting for Long Hours Without Moving
Prolonged sitting keeps hip flexors in a shortened position, leading to stiffness and reduced mobility. Over time, this can contribute to chronic hip and lower back issues.
2. Skipping Leg Day
Avoiding lower-body workouts weakens the muscles that stabilise the knees and hips. Strength training for the legs is essential for joint protection and long-term mobility.
3. Wearing Unsupportive Shoes
Footwear impacts more than just the feet. Poor support can affect alignment from the ankles up to the spine, increasing strain across multiple joints.
4. Sleeping on the Stomach
While comfortable for some, this position can disrupt natural spinal alignment, potentially leading to neck and back problems over time.
5. Ignoring Joint Pain
Dismissing mild pain and “walking it off” can allow small injuries to worsen. Early attention and proper care can prevent long-term damage or the need for surgery.
According to Dr Abbasi, musculoskeletal health is the result of consistent daily habits. Small changes today can help prevent chronic pain and preserve mobility in the years ahead.
