From strict trophy rules to record-breaking winners at the Academy Awards

As the 98th ceremony approaches, one interesting rule set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences states that winners cannot freely sell their statuettes. Since 1951, recipients or their heirs must first offer the trophy back to the Academy for just one dollar before selling it, ensuring the award remains a symbol of artistic achievement rather than a collectible item.
The Oscar statuette itself has a distinctive design. Standing about 13.5 inches tall and weighing roughly 8.5 pounds, the trophy is made of solid bronze coated with 24-karat gold. Over the decades, the golden figure has become one of the most recognisable symbols in global entertainment, representing the highest honour in filmmaking.
Several legendary artists hold remarkable records in the history of the Oscars. Walt Disney remains the most awarded individual with 26 Oscars, while Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the most Best Actress wins with four awards. Cedric Gibbons earned eleven Oscars for production design, John Ford won four for Best Director, and Daniel Day-Lewis is the only performer to win three Best Actor awards.
