March 13, 2025: Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe has been cast in the upcoming Cold War thriller Billion Dollar Spy, joining Harry Lawtey in the lead role. The film, which is set against the high-stakes backdrop of the late Cold War, tells the remarkable true story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet engineer who risked everything to pass top-secret intelligence to the United States.
The screenplay, adapted from David E. Hoffman’s bestselling book, was rewritten by Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan, with an original draft by Ben August. Directed by BAFTA Award winner Amma Asante, Billion Dollar Spy follows the gripping journey of Tolkachev (played by Crowe) as he attempts to expose the inner workings of the Soviet regime, despite repeated rejections from the CIA. Eventually, he finds an ally in CIA agent Tom Lenihan (Lawtey), who helps him turn the tide and shift the balance of power.
Crowe’s involvement in the project is highly anticipated, as he previously collaborated with producer Akiva Goldsman on other notable films. Goldsman expressed his excitement about working with Crowe again, alongside Walden Media and the talented Amma Asante in bringing this incredible story of resistance and patriotism to the screen.
