Pankaj Udhas Honored Posthumously with Padma Bhushan for His Musical Legacy

President Droupadi Murmu presents the prestigious award to late ghazal maestro’s family in an emotional ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

New Delhi, April 28:
Legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas was posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in a moving ceremony held at the Ganatantra Mandap of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday evening.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the honor to Udhas’ wife, Farida Udhas, as the family accepted the recognition with mixed emotions. The Padma Awards were announced earlier on the eve of Republic Day.

Speaking to ANI in January, Farida Udhas and daughters Nayaab and Reva expressed pride and deep sorrow over the honor being awarded after his passing.
“It’s a matter of pride for us but we are also extremely sad as he (Pankaj Udhas) is not here with us,” Farida said.

His daughter added, “We wish he was here to receive this award. He would have been immensely happy. Through his music, he connected borders and made India proud on the global stage.”

Nayaab Udhas reflected on the bittersweet nature of the moment, noting that January 26 marked 11 months since her father’s death.
“We are really proud of him. He is not here to witness this honor, but we are grateful to the government and everyone who acknowledged his life’s work,” she said.

Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on February 26, 2024, at the age of 72, left an indelible mark on Indian music. Rising to fame with his 1980 solo ghazal album Aahat, he followed it with classics like Mukarar (1981), Tarrannum (1982), and Mehfil (1983).

Some of his most beloved songs include Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandani Raat Mein, Na Kajre Ki Dhaar, Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar, and Thodi Thodi Piya Karo, which continue to resonate across generations.
