Pankaj Udhas’ Wife, Daughters Get Emotional On Being Honoured With Padma Bhushan

January 26, 2025: The announcement of Pankaj Udhas being posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan on Republic Day was met with mixed emotions by his family. His wife, Farida Udhas, and daughters, Nayaab and Reva Udhas, expressed both pride and deep sorrow, as they remembered the late ghazal legend.

Farida Udhas shared how proud they were of the honor, but also how heartbreaking it was that Pankaj Udhas was not there to receive the award. “It’s a matter of pride for us but we are also extremely sad as he is not here with us,” she said, unable to hold back her tears. Reva added that her father would have been thrilled by the recognition, and she thanked the government for honoring his legacy. “He always gave his best to make India proud. Through his music, he connected borders and put India on the global map,” she said.

Nayaab, the eldest daughter, reflected on the poignant timing, as January 26 marked 11 months since her father’s passing. “It’s a bitter-sweet moment for us,” she shared, while expressing their pride in his work. “We are really proud of him,” she added, feeling grateful for the recognition from the government.

Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on February 26, 2024, at the age of 72, was known for his soulful ghazals, with iconic tracks like Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandani Raat Mein, and Na Kajre Ki Dhaar. His contribution to the music world, especially in bringing ghazals to a wider audience, remains celebrated. His posthumous Padma Bhushan award serves as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to music and his country.
