Phoebe Waller-Bridge Renews Deal with Amazon, Shifts to First-Look Arrangement
Los Angeles, April 1: Award-winning writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to continue her creative collaboration with Amazon, but under a new arrangement. The Fleabag creator has moved from an exclusive overall deal to a first-look pact with the streaming giant, aligning with a broader trend among high-profile Hollywood talent.
This marks Waller-Bridge’s third deal with Amazon since her breakout success with Fleabag, the Emmy-winning comedy co-produced by the BBC and Amazon Prime Video. The new agreement, signed in November 2024 — just before the exit of former Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke — gives Amazon first rights to consider Waller-Bridge’s future projects while allowing her the freedom to collaborate with other platforms and studios.
The shift mirrors recent moves by fellow creatives like J.J. Abrams (Warner Bros.) and Lee Daniels (20th Television), who also transitioned from exclusivity to first-look deals. These arrangements are increasingly popular, offering greater flexibility to top-tier creators in a competitive streaming landscape.
Waller-Bridge is currently working on an Amazon series adaptation of Tomb Raider, which was greenlit last year, and is also narrating a two-part Amazon documentary about octopuses, further strengthening her ongoing ties with the platform.
She initially signed with Amazon in 2019 and renewed her overall deal in January 2023. Her partnership with Amazon has continued to evolve, cementing her status as a sought-after voice in both scripted TV and streaming content.
With the new deal, fans and industry watchers alike can expect more innovative and bold storytelling from Waller-Bridge — whether it lands on Amazon or beyond.
