Popular Model San Rechal Dies By Suicide In Puducherry

July 14, 2025: Popular model and social media influencer San Rechal, aged 26, died by suicide on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the fashion and entertainment communities across India. Known for her advocacy against colourism and for championing inclusivity in the modelling industry, San’s untimely death has reopened critical discussions around mental health and societal pressures faced by young women in the limelight.

According to police sources, San Rechal allegedly consumed a large quantity of tablets while visiting her father’s residence in Puducherry. She was rushed first to a government hospital, then to a private facility, and finally admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), where she succumbed.

Authorities suggest that financial strain and personal distress may have contributed to her decision. Investigations revealed that she had recently sold and pledged jewelry to fund her modelling ambitions, and was reportedly hoping for financial support from her family—support that did not materialize due to her father’s obligations toward her sibling.

San Rechal rose to prominence after winning the Miss Puducherry 2022 title and quickly became known for using her platform to challenge the Indian entertainment industry’s obsession with fair skin. Her bold and unapologetic stance on colourism, especially in a traditionally biased field like modelling, won her admiration and a significant following on social media.

In a suicide note recovered by police, Rechal wrote that no one was responsible for her death. Nevertheless, given her recent marriage, officials have launched a Tahsildar-level inquiry to examine whether any domestic issues played a role in her mental health struggles.
