Reflecting on his legacy, Chopra emphasized that Manoj Kumar, widely known as “Bharat Kumar” for his portrayal in patriotic films, deserved to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.
Chopra, who worked with Kumar in several iconic films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), and Mera Saaya (1966), expressed his admiration for the late actor’s contributions to cinema and the country. He said, “Usko government ne pura diya nahin. They should have given him Bharat Ratna. He has done so much for the country…There was always a great message in every film that glorified India.”
Manoj Kumar’s legacy as a filmmaker and actor who inspired nationalism and pride through his films has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Kumar passed away at the age of 87, with his son, Kunal Goswami, confirming his last rites would be performed at 11 am on April 5 at Pawan Hans in Vile Parle.

His death was attributed to cardiogenic shock following acute myocardial infarction, compounded by decompensated liver cirrhosis. The loss has left the film industry in mourning, with many, including Prem Chopra, remembering the actor’s extraordinary contributions.
