Prime Video Cancels ‘Cruel Intentions’ Series After One Season
Los Angeles, March 11: Cruel Intentions will not be making a comeback for a second season, as Prime Video has officially canceled the series after just one season, sources confirmed on Monday.
The series, an adaptation of the 1999 cult film, was set in Washington, D.C., and reimagined the original movie’s premise for a new generation. It was developed by writers Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman and produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film.
Inspired by the classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos, the Prime Video series followed two ruthless step-siblings who would stop at nothing to maintain their dominance in the elite world of Greek life at a prestigious Washington, D.C. college.
Their power is threatened after a brutal hazing scandal shakes the Panhellenic system, forcing them to resort to manipulation, seduction, and deceit—including targeting the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.
The main cast featured:
The series was backed by industry heavyweights, including Neal H. Moritz, who produced the original film, and Roger Kumble, the writer-director of the 1999 classic. Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher served as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers.
Despite the star power and nostalgia factor, Cruel Intentions struggled to generate sufficient buzz or viewership numbers, leading to its cancellation.
The original 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, and Ryan Phillippe remains a cult favorite, known for its bold storytelling and scandalous plot. However, this latest adaptation failed to resonate with audiences, marking another failed attempt to expand the Cruel Intentions universe.
While no official reason has been given for the cancellation, insiders suggest that low viewership and mixed reviews played a role in Prime Video’s decision to axe the show.
Fans of the franchise will now have to turn back to the original film—or hope for another revival down the line.
