Priyanka Chopra’s Mom Speaks on Deepika Padukone Taking Over Ram Leela Role & Her Daughter’s Decision

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela became a massive hit, with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh delivering stellar performances. However, not many know that Priyanka Chopra was initially considered for the lead role before being replaced by Deepika.

March 5, 2025: In a recent conversation with Lehren Retro, Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, shed light on how her daughter handled the change.

“I don’t remember much from that time. I just know that she went to his office next door when I was with my patients in my clinic. When she came back, she said that I am only doing a song in Ram Leela. I asked her, ‘What happened?’ She said, ‘I think that’s better,’” Madhu Chopra recalled.

Priyanka’s Graceful Approach & Bhansali’s Next Offer

Madhu Chopra suggested that Priyanka made a thoughtful decision, emphasizing that she never held grudges. “She might have had some lovely discussions with him and agreed to it because they are still friends,” she said.

Following Ram Leela, Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered Priyanka the lead role in Mary Kom. Initially hesitant, Bhansali eventually moved forward with the project, which went on to be a critical and commercial success.

Madhu Chopra affirmed that Priyanka doesn’t believe in revenge. “She doesn’t keep that revenge attitude. She did the film because Sanjay asked her to. Omung (Kumar) was the director, and she stayed with Mary Kom for a while to see everything,” she added.

Priyanka’s Challenge as Kashibai in Bajirao Mastani

Madhu Chopra also reflected on Priyanka’s performance as Kashibai in Bajirao Mastani, calling it one of her most challenging roles.

“Kashibai was very hard because there were tight shots, and it was all on the face. The expressions were everything… Sanjay is not an easy director, and keeping him pleased with the performance was the target. She was very focused—no distractions, not even casual conversations inside her van,” she shared.

Priyanka Chopra’s Upcoming Projects

On the work front, Priyanka Chopra has wrapped up her action-thriller The Bluff alongside Karl Urban. She will also be seen in Heads of State, sharing screen space with John Cena and Idris Elba.
