‘Pushpa 2’ Inches Closer to Baahubali 2: Can Allu Arjun’s Blockbuster Overtake the Iconic Indian Film?

January 31, 2025: Pushpa 2: The Rule continues its phenomenal run at the box office as it inches closer to Baahubali 2’s monumental record. The Allu Arjun-led Telugu action thriller, with a runtime of 200–224 minutes, has emerged as one of the most significant cinematic events in Indian film history. On its 57th day in theatres, the film collected ₹12 lakh domestically, bringing its India net total to ₹1,233.27 crore.

Challenging the Titans

Currently standing at a global gross of ₹1,740.95 crore, Pushpa 2 is just ₹50 crore shy of surpassing SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 (₹1,790 crore). However, Aamir Khan’s Dangal remains a distant milestone with a towering collection of ₹2,070 crore worldwide.

Despite its makers’ efforts, including a re-release with an extended 20-minute cut on January 17, the film’s earning momentum has slowed, making it challenging to cross the ₹1,800 crore mark.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film, made on a budget of ₹400–500 crore, earned ₹271 crore in overseas markets while its domestic gross stands at ₹1,469.95 crore. While impressive, these figures fall short of earlier projections, particularly the ₹1,831 crore milestone claimed by its creators.

OTT Success

The blockbuster is now available on Netflix, where it has garnered strong responses from the OTT audience. The streaming release includes an additional 23 minutes of footage, appealing to fans who couldn’t get enough of the theatrical experience.

Star-Studded Cast and Legacy

Directed by Sukumar, Pushpa 2 stars Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, Jagapathi Babu, Sunil, and Rao Ramesh alongside Allu Arjun. The film, a sequel to Pushpa: The Rise, has cemented Allu Arjun’s status as a pan-India superstar, becoming the biggest Indian box office opener in history.

While the journey to overtaking Baahubali 2 is uncertain, Pushpa 2 has undeniably made its mark as one of the most celebrated Indian films of all time.
