October 17, 2025: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the residence of late Assamese music sensation Zubeen Garg in Guwahati on Friday, October 17, to offer his condolences to the bereaved family following the singer’s untimely death in September.

Visuals circulating online show the Congress leader meeting Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and other family members, and consoling them nearly a month after the tragedy.

Zubeen Was Like ‘Mount Kanchenjunga,’ Says Gandhi

Speaking to the media outside Zubeen Garg’s house, Rahul Gandhi paid an emotional tribute to the late artist, drawing a powerful analogy to the mountains.

“It is very sad for me to come here under these circumstances. I told the family I would have liked to come under happier circumstances,” Gandhi said.

He then recalled his connection to the majestic mountain peak: “When I was 17, I went for a mountaineering course in Sikkim, and every day during training, I would see Mount Kanchenjunga. What I liked about the mountains is that they are honest, transparent, unshakable, and beautiful.”

Gandhi revealed that local Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi had told him that Zubeen Garg had described himself in a similar way. “Gaurav Gogoi told me that Zubeen ji said he was like Kanchenjunga, and it immediately connected with me – he truly embodied those qualities. He had wealth, success, and humility, which is something Assam should be proud of,” he added.

Police Probe Continues Amid Speculation

Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 in Singapore. His death, which occurred while he was reportedly swimming, has been followed by an intense investigation by authorities in both India and Singapore amid public speculation of foul play.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) recently issued a statement to curb the spread of rumours, confirming that their preliminary investigation does not suspect foul play. The SPF stated that the investigation into the case, which is being conducted under Singapore’s Coroners Act 2010, may take up to another three months before findings are submitted to the State Coroner.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police’s investigation has led to the arrest of five people, including the Northeast Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, his police officer cousin Sandipan Garg, and his two personal security officers. The arrests highlight the complexity and serious nature of the ongoing probe into the beloved singer’s tragic death.
