Raj Kapoor and Nargis’ alleged love affair began during the filming of Shree 420. Nargis was just 16, while Raj Kapoor was already married to Krishna Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor’s grief wasn’t confined to private spaces; it spilled into his family life. Krishna Raj Kapoor, in a conversation with journalist Bunny Reuben, revealed the extent of his anguish. She recounted how Raj Kapoor would come home drunk night after night, crying uncontrollably for Nargis. On more than one occasion, he reportedly collapsed in the bathtub, overcome by his emotions.

Their First Meeting: A Magical Memory

In Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman by Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor reminisced about his first meeting with Nargis. Recalling the day, he described it as if he had seen an “angel.” “The door opened, and what did I see? An angel standing before me. She had short hair, with a lock of it falling across one eye… like she was looking at me with just one eye. Woh kisi pari se kam nahin thi.”

This poignant moment of their first encounter was later immortalized on screen in Bobby, where Dimple Kapadia’s character opens the door in a similar fashion when Rishi Kapoor’s character first sees her.
