Rakesh Roshan Reflects on Making Hrithik Roshan "Uncomfortable" as Assistant Director on Karan Arjun*
November 19, 2024: Rakesh Roshan on Hrithik’s Humble Beginnings
As Karan Arjun gears up for its re-release 30 years after its original debut, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan reminisced about his son Hrithik Roshan’s early days in the film industry. Long before he became a superstar, Hrithik worked as an assistant director on the 1995 blockbuster.
In an interview with Indian Express, Rakesh revealed that Hrithik opted to stay in India and learn filmmaking instead of pursuing further studies abroad. “When I asked Hrithik what he wanted to do, he said he wanted to be an actor. I advised him to gain experience as an assistant director, and he chose to work with me,” shared Rakesh.
To ensure Hrithik understood the value of hard work, Rakesh insisted he immerse himself in the daily grind of film production. “I made him a little uncomfortable. While I traveled by car, Hrithik traveled by bus or train along with the crew. He also shared accommodation with four people from the unit,” Rakesh explained, emphasizing the importance of humility in learning the craft.
Hrithik worked as an assistant director not only on Karan Arjun but also on two other films before making his acting debut in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai in 2000. The film, directed by Rakesh Roshan, catapulted Hrithik to stardom, solidifying his place as one of Bollywood’s most successful actors.
Reflecting on Hrithik’s journey, Rakesh expressed pride in his son’s achievements. Hrithik’s latest film, Fighter, directed by Siddharth Anand, showcased him in an elite air force unit, further proving his versatility as an actor.
