The National Human Rights Commission has urged the Mumbai Police to file an FIR against the actor and Netflix, alleging a violation of the ban on e-cigarettes. The controversy has sparked a debate as a high-profile star, set to play a revered deity, faces legal scrutiny for promoting a banned substance.
September 22, 2025: In a new development surrounding Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Ba*ds of Bollywood, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for legal action against actor Ranbir Kapoor and the show’s producers over a controversial vaping scene. The NHRC has urged the Mumbai Police to register an FIR, citing a violation of the Prohibition of Electric Cigarettes Act, 2019.
The complaint, filed by activist Vinay Joshi, alleges that a scene featuring Ranbir Kapoor using an e-cigarette was shown without any on-screen warning or disclaimer. According to the complaint, the depiction could “mislead or negatively influence young viewers” and promote the use of a substance that is banned in India.
The NHRC has officially written to the Mumbai Police Commissioner, asking for an investigation and the registration of a case against Ranbir Kapoor, the show’s producers, and the streaming platform, Netflix.
The human rights body has also issued a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging them to take action against content that could have a negative impact on the youth. As of now, neither Netflix nor Ranbir Kapoor’s team has released a public statement on the matter.
