Ravi Kishan Opens Up About Casting Couch Experience and His Role in Laapataa Ladies

The actor-politician shares insights from his three-decade-long career, including his personal struggles and dedication to his craft.

December 19, 2024: Actor-politician Ravi Kishan, a veteran with over three decades in the film industry, has built an impressive career spanning Bhojpuri and Hindi cinema. Known for his versatility, Ravi recently opened up about his experiences, including the harsh realities of the casting couch and his commitment to authentic performances.

In a candid conversation on a podcast, Ravi Kishan revealed the challenges he faced as a young actor trying to make a mark in the industry. “In every profession, in every industry, such incidents happen. When you are slim, beautiful, young, fit, and struggling without money, such attempts are often made on you,” he confessed, acknowledging his own experiences with the casting couch. “It’s a part and parcel of the movie business that everyone is aware of,” he added.

A Stellar Performance in Laapataa Ladies

Ravi’s portrayal of cop Manohar in the critically acclaimed Laapataa Ladies was one of the highlights of 2023. The film, directed by Kiran Rao, was celebrated as one of the year’s biggest hits and became India’s official entry to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The actor shared insights into his dedication to the role, revealing how he drew inspiration from a Bihar police officer he had met. “Right from the mannerisms to the authentic body language as a cop, that officer left a lasting impression on me,” Ravi said.

To add authenticity to his character, Ravi also committed to a unique character trait—chewing paan. He disclosed that he ate about 160 paans during the shoot to perfect this quirk, which was suggested by director Kiran Rao as a way to enhance the character’s personality.

“Kiran Rao wanted the character to be snacking while speaking. That’s when the idea of chewing paan came up, and it eventually became a defining trait of Manohar,” Ravi explained.
