Raza Murad Opens Up About Working With Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Calls Him A ‘Genius’ And ‘Perfectionist’

March 30, 2025: Veteran actor Raza Murad, known for his iconic roles in Indian cinema, recently opened up about his experiences working with one of the most revered filmmakers in the industry, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In a candid interview, Murad discussed Bhansali’s unique filmmaking process, his perfectionist nature, and the high standards he sets for actors on set.

Murad shared how Bhansali, a huge fan of the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, first approached him for the 2013 film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. He recalled their first meeting fondly, where they spent most of their time discussing Raj Kapoor’s classic Prem Rog and his approach to filmmaking. Bhansali’s admiration for Kapoor was evident, and Murad spoke of how Bhansali would often talk about Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Kapoor’s iconic film, saying it touched his heart so much that whenever it aired, he would drop everything to watch it.

The actor also praised Bhansali’s perfectionism and attention to detail, highlighting how the director’s work ethic sets him apart in the industry. “He is a workaholic and a perfectionist. He is a very hard taskmaster. As an actor, if you satisfy him, you can work with any director in the world,” Murad stated. He emphasized that Bhansali has an eye for every minute detail—from the costumes and makeup to the background colors—ensuring his vision is fully realized. “He wants exactly what he envisions, and there is no compromise in that,” Murad added.

Describing Bhansali as a “genius,” Murad praised the director for his immense contribution to the visual appeal of his films. Bhansali’s meticulous care and passion for filmmaking are reflected in his films’ grandeur and artistic beauty. Murad mentioned the director’s vast team that works tirelessly to ensure no flaw, no matter how small, goes unnoticed.

Murad also recalled how Bhansali paid special attention to his look in Padmaavat (2017), where even the style of his beard was carefully chosen. Bhansali personally approved the final look, illustrating his obsession with perfection in every aspect of his films.

Reflecting on his continued collaboration with Bhansali, Murad shared that he is once again working with the director on an upcoming project, which will mark their fifth collaboration. “Yes, the invitation has come for a new project. I think I am the only actor he has repeated five times,” Murad said with pride. He added that Bhansali calls him his “lucky mascot,” further highlighting the trust the filmmaker places in him.

Over the years, Raza Murad has worked with Bhansali in some of his most iconic films. From Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), where he played the role of a sarpanch, to Bajirao Mastani (2015), where he portrayed the Nizam of Hyderabad, Murad has been a part of Bhansali’s cinematic journey. He also appeared in Padmaavat (2017) as Jalaluddin Khilji and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), where he had a smaller role.

Murad’s candid reflections on working with Bhansali underscore the director’s dedication to his craft and the deep bond between them, which has flourished over multiple successful collaborations in Indian cinema.
