Pratik Gandhi and his wife Bhamini Oza Gandhi are set to portray Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, respectively, in the upcoming series titled ‘Gandhi’. This casting decision brings the real-life couple together onscreen for the first time, fulfilling a long-held dream since their early days in theatre.
Bhamini expressed her enthusiasm about the role, remarking, “Stepping into the shoes of Kasturba Gandhi is a serendipitous moment in my acting career. It’s an honor to work with Hansal Mehta and the team at Applause Entertainment, and especially alongside Pratik. I aim to infuse my portrayal of Kasturba with sincerity and an authentic connection to her story.”
The announcement coincided with the 155th anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi’s birth, adding symbolic significance to the occasion. Director Hansal Mehta praised Bhamini’s formidable stage presence and expressed excitement about her interpretation of Kasturba’s character, describing it as a “lifetime role”.
Sameer Nair, Managing Director of Applause Entertainment, highlighted the unique authenticity that casting Pratik and Bhamini brings to the series. “Their real-life chemistry will undoubtedly add a profound depth to the depiction of these iconic figures,” he said.
The series draws from Ramachandra Guha’s comprehensive biographies, ‘Gandhi before India’ and ‘Gandhi-The Years that Changed the World’, ensuring a rich, historical narrative. Siddhartha Basu, renowned as the ‘Father of Indian Television Quizzing’, is involved as a historical consultant, factual advisor, and creative consultant, promising an accurate and engaging exploration of Gandhi’s formative years and his pivotal role in world history.
