Rebecca Romijn Reveals ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Script Still Unfinished

Mystique Actress Unsure If Her Filming Is Complete. Actress Shares Glimpses Into Highly Secretive Marvel Set

July 27, 2025; Actress and former model Rebecca Romijn has offered a candid update on her much-anticipated return as the iconic shapeshifter Mystique in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ While expressing immense excitement, Romijn revealed that the film’s script is still a work in progress, leaving her unsure if her filming for the Marvel blockbuster is complete.

Rebecca Romijn Unsure If Mystique Filming is Done for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as Script Remains Incomplete

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Romijn shared, “I’m not quite sure. The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps.” This hints at the fluid nature of large-scale Marvel productions.

When pressed about having read the full script, the actress remained tight-lipped, playfully stating, “I cannot confirm nor deny that I have read the entire script.” She also kept details of her co-stars under wraps but described the experience of shooting alongside both her original X-Men castmates and a new, blended ensemble as “very surreal.”

“It was very surreal to be with my old cast as well as a new cast,” she recounted. “I had crazy dreams while I was there for a large chunk of the shooting. Like, really kind of regressive dreams. It was very strange, my brain was really trying to organise. Like, wow, this is a character I played 25 years ago, 20 years ago. Yeah, it was very surreal.” Romijn last portrayed Mystique extensively in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, with a brief cameo in X-Men: First Class (2011).

Revisiting the formidable mutant after nearly two decades was a different experience for Romijn. “Oh, I know her very well. I went back in with full ownership of her,” she stated. She confessed to having “imposter syndrome” at the beginning of her original run as Mystique but emphasized a newfound confidence this time around. “I did not have that going back this time. It was a very different experience.”

Marvel unveiled the star-studded cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in late March, notably integrating several beloved actors from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe. Joining Romijn from the inaugural 2000 film are Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Alan Cumming also reprises his role as Nightcrawler from X2: X-Men United, and Kelsey Grammer returns as Beast, whom he played in X-Men: The Last Stand. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18, 2026.
