Review: “Wild Wild Punjab” – A Familiar Yet Flawed Buddy-Comedy Journey

The plot: The film is a buddy-comedy that revolves around four friends. A heartbroken Rajesh Khanna (Varun Sharma), on the behest of his friends is on his way to his ex-girlfriend’s wedding to tell her, “I’m over you!”

His friends Maan Arora (Sunny Singh), Gaurav Jain (Jassie Gill), and Honey (Manjot Singh) accompany him in his endevour.

As the gang continues their journey, they are forced to take unplanned detours and meet new characters. The story embraces issues of drug menace and dowry, paired with an unintended marriage and gun violence, all in the name of wildness, but is it really wild?
Not really!

The film is a Udta Punjab meets Fukrey meets Hangover and most sequences appear familiar.

First time director, Simarpreet Singh tries hard but sadly the punch-lines don’t land, the effort of broaching social issues is at best touch and go and the noise in the film should have been cut a notch or two.

Varun Sharma has done a decent job, but appears to play an extension of himself and his most popular character Choocha in Fukrey.

The actor clearly has comedic timing but even the best comic can’t make the same joke work with the same audience multiple times.

The film is extremely boisterous and over the top like many other Punjabi films, in an effort to be overly funny, but the fact that the film tries too hard, it becomes quite a pain.

The film is a poor memory of a some of the best laugh riots. Watch at your own risk.
