Robert Downey Jr. is 'So Dialed In' as Doctor Doom – Russo Brothers on His MCU Comeback
Washington [US], March 6 – The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set for a seismic shift, as Robert Downey Jr. returns—not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Speaking to Deadline, directors Joe and Anthony Russo gave insight into Downey’s intense preparation for the role, revealing his deep commitment to crafting a three-dimensional, complex antagonist.
“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in,” said Joe Russo.
Anthony Russo echoed his brother’s sentiments, adding:
“That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.”
Fans were shocked and thrilled when Marvel announced Downey’s return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom at last year’s Comic-Con. This marks a major departure from his legendary role as Tony Stark, a character he played for over a decade.
Joe Russo revealed that Downey is heavily involved in shaping Doctor Doom, from developing the backstory to conceptualizing costume ideas.
“I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters, and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character,” Joe added.
Slated for release on May 1, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will be the first of two epic films, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.
Alongside Downey’s Doctor Doom, the Russo brothers have confirmed other major castings:
With the Russo brothers back at the helm, following their success with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, expectations are sky-high for this next chapter in the Marvel saga.
With Downey Jr. embracing his villainous side and a multiversal war brewing, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be a groundbreaking moment for Marvel.
One thing is certain—the MCU will never be the same again.
