April 18, 2025: Ryan Gosling is set to lead the cast in the highly anticipated new Star Wars film titled Star Wars: Starfighter, which will be directed by Shawn Levy. According to Variety, the movie is slated to begin production in the fall and will hit theaters on May 28, 2027.

The announcement came at the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, where Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and CCO Dave Filoni unveiled the plans for Starfighter. The screenplay has been written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on films such as The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You.

During the livestreamed event, Gosling and Levy teased the new project. Gosling, sporting a cap reading “Never tell me the odds,” expressed his excitement about joining the Star Wars universe, highlighting the significance of movies in inspiring creativity. He shared his admiration for the passion and creativity of Star Wars fans, saying, “The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.'”

Details regarding the other cast members have yet to be revealed, but it is confirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter will be a standalone film that introduces new characters to the Star Wars universe. The story is set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, marking the continuation of the saga post-Skywalker.

Fans are eagerly anticipating this new chapter in the Star Wars universe, as the film promises to bring fresh faces and stories to one of the most beloved franchises in cinematic history.
