December 31, 2024: Sabrina Carpenter’s infectious hit “Espresso” has certainly made a major splash in 2024, with the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter reflecting on its unexpected success in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
When the song first dropped earlier this year, Carpenter had no idea how much it would resonate with audiences. She admitted, “I really didn’t know if it would connect,” but noted that the confidence and the upbeat, catchy nature of the track were things she truly believed in. She added, “But I liked it, and that was kind of all that mattered to me in that moment.” That self-assurance clearly paid off, as “Espresso” quickly became a viral sensation.
The song’s success has led to a fun and unexpected collaboration with Dunkin’, where Carpenter co-created the “Sabrina’s Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso” — a coffee drink inspired by the track. Carpenter, a lifelong East Coaster who grew up with Dunkin’, saw the partnership as a perfect fit. “When they approached me about a collab, I realized my window for a coffee partnership was closing, and I hadn’t done it yet,” she shared. The collaboration isn’t just about a drink; it’s about meaningful connection with her fans, especially when she can’t be physically present on tour. “People really appreciate connection more now because it’s such a rarity,” she explained.
As “Espresso” continued to go viral, inspiring everything from memes and espresso martinis to even a sketch on Saturday Night Live, Sabrina was pleasantly surprised by how widespread its popularity became. “I remember deciding to put this song out in the beginning of summer and thinking, ‘Espresso, coffee—it’s more of a fall beverage.’ I really didn’t know if it would connect,” she confessed. But fans quickly proved her wrong.
Beyond the hit single, Sabrina also treated fans to a festive delight with her Netflix Christmas special, A Nonsense Christmas. Channeling the playful and whimsical energy of entertainment legends like Cher, Dolly Parton, and Lucille Ball, Carpenter said, “It was a really quick turnaround, but I wanted it to feel aligned with my personality—playful and fun.” The special featured numerous guest appearances, with Carpenter reaching out to friends and artists she admired, creating a truly collaborative and organic experience.
As the year draws to a close, Sabrina is looking ahead to 2025. While she’s wrapping up the international leg of her Short n’ Sweet tour, she’s already thinking about new music and future projects. “I’m always sort of thinking one year ahead,” she said, hinting at new material for her next album. Though she’s keeping specifics under wraps, Carpenter teased that fans can expect more playful, light-hearted content. “I’m just going to keep having fun with it, not take it too seriously, and see where it goes.”
It’s clear Sabrina is continuing to evolve both as an artist and as an entertainer, embracing her creative freedom while keeping things fun and light-hearted. Fans can look forward to much more from her in the coming year!
