Kunal Kemmu Recalls Saif Ali Khan's Stabbing Attack: 'The Most Important Thing Was His Safety'
January 28, 2025: Mumbai: Mumbai Police’s investigation into the brutal stabbing of actor Saif Ali Khan has uncovered a trail leading to Khukumoni Sheikh, a resident of West Bengal’s Nadia district. Sheikh allegedly provided a SIM card to the accused, Sariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally and has been arrested for the attack.
Police sources revealed that Islam, 30, crossed the Dawki River along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya seven months ago. Using forged documents, he adopted the alias “Bijoy Das” and moved between West Bengal and Mumbai.

Islam initially stayed in West Bengal, where he reportedly used a local resident’s Aadhaar card to procure the SIM card in question. The accused later moved to Mumbai, securing jobs that required no official documentation. Two Bangladeshi identity cards seized during the investigation confirm his origins.
“Islam’s National Identity Card lists his birth date as March 3, 1994, and names his father as Mohammed Ruhul Islam. A learner’s driving licence also links him to Barisal, Bangladesh,” an officer stated.
On January 16, Islam allegedly attempted a burglary at Saif Ali Khan’s 12th-floor residence in Bandra’s upscale “Satguru Sharan” building. When confronted, he stabbed the actor six times, leaving him critically injured.
Saif’s wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, recounted the horrifying ordeal. “The attacker was aggressive. I saw him stab Saif repeatedly. Our immediate priority was getting him to the hospital,” she said.
The accused also demanded ₹1 crore from Eliyama Philips, a nurse who was caring for the couple’s younger son, Jehangir (Jeh), during the incident.
Following an intensive 70-hour manhunt involving multiple police teams and extensive CCTV footage analysis, Islam was apprehended in Thane’s Hiranandani Estate on January 19.
Islam has reportedly admitted to stabbing Saif multiple times in a bid to escape. However, his father, Mohammed Ruhul Islam, has claimed his son is being framed and has sought intervention from the Bangladeshi foreign ministry and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Doctors treating Saif removed a 2.5-inch piece of a broken knife from his spine during emergency surgery, noting that deeper penetration could have caused severe, potentially fatal damage. Saif was discharged on January 21 and is now recovering at home.
