Saif Ali Khan Opens Up About Split with Amrita Singh

The iconic couch was graced by veteran actor Sharmila Tagore and her son Saif Ali Khan in the most recent episode of ‘Koffee with Karan 8’. Talking with host Karan Johar, the mother-son team discussed a range of topics, from Saif Ali Khan ‘s early stories to Sharmila’s classic movies. Saif’s first marriage to actress Amrita Singh was also discussed. October 1991 marked the marriage of Saif and Amrita. They did, however, split up in 2004. Son Ibrahim and daughter Sara are shared by the two. When Saif and Amrita got married, they were both 21 years old. When asked why he made the decision to get married so young, Saif said, “It was almost like running away from home.” I don’t remember so many things going on and I found a kind of security and an idea that it feels great. I thought I could make a home out of that.”

Sharmila Tagore went on to say that there were many similarities between Saif and Amrita Singh. “They were both strikingly alike. They were both very funny. Every time they spoke, there would be a lot of laughter, impersonating others, and hilariously tearing someone to pieces. She tells wonderful stories, and he is skilled at impersonation. They appeared genuinely content together,” she continued. But their union was short-lived—just 13 years. Recalling his breakup with Amrita, Saif stated that his mother Sharmila Tagore was the first to learn of his decision to part ways with the “Aina” star. “I would like to mention that prior to the separation, my mother was the first person I spoke to.

He said, “It helped a lot when she took a deep breath, paused the phone, and said, ‘I am with you if that’s what you want.'” The ‘not so harmonious time’ that ensued after the split was then discussed by Sharmila. “No breakup is easy when you’ve been together for so long and have such beautiful kids. Then, it lacks harmony. Although I tried, that stage was unpleasant because I knew it would be hard to maintain harmony at that point because everyone was hurt. However, that’s beside the point; she required some time to calm down.” Sharmila went on to say that the family was not having a good time because they had lost both Amrita and her and Saif’s children.

“There are a lot of other factors involved; it’s not just about staying away. We were very attached to the kids, and Ibrahim was only three, so it wasn’t a happy time for us. In particular, Tiger had a lot of affection for Ibrahim and would remark, “That’s a good lad.” That time with him was not given to him. We therefore felt doubly bereaved upon losing both Amrita and the two children. Thus, it’s just not him, and we also had to get used to everything else,” she continued. You can watch “Koffee with Karan 8” on Disney+Hotstar.
