December 12, 2024: Sarah Michelle Gellar recently opened up about a funny but slightly embarrassing moment when she accidentally revealed details about the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, currently in the works. The actress, who famously played Helen Shivers in the 1997 cult classic horror-thriller, admitted that she had a “big ‘oops’ moment” when she posted a behind-the-scenes photo from the film’s set during Thanksgiving.
Speaking on the Live with Kelly and Mark show, Gellar confessed that she got into a “little bit of trouble” after sharing a photo from the set, not realizing that the filmmakers hadn’t officially announced that filming had begun. She explained, “You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know. So my husband’s [Freddie Prinze Jr.] starring in the movie and it was Thanksgiving, so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set and I was like, ‘Oh, what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.”
The photo Gellar posted showed a chair with “I Know What You Did Last Summer” written on it, with a playful caption that read: “Scooby Doo 3 coming soon…”—a nod to another franchise she starred in alongside Prinze. However, the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel had not yet announced its production or social media presence at the time, which made her post a bit premature. Gellar later found out that the movie didn’t even have a social media account at the time, and the makers had been keeping things under wraps.
“They hadn’t announced they started filming. Yeah … that was an ‘Oops! My bad!'” she laughed, acknowledging her mistake. “They had to make one after I did that,” she added. Despite the mix-up, she described the experience as a special moment, especially given her personal connection to the project.
Gellar reflected on how meaningful the experience was, especially because I Know What You Did Last Summer is where she and her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., first met. “It was such a cool picture, and it was so much fun,” she said. “I mean, that’s the movie Freddie and I met on. So, it was really cool to bring our kids there. And my best friend in California is directing it and wrote it. It was just such a special time.”
Despite the behind-the-scenes hiccup, fans are excited to see the return of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise. The sequel, which will be released on July 18, 2025, is already generating buzz, and Gellar’s accidental reveal only added to the anticipation. The film will continue the story of the 1997 slasher, and many fans are hoping to see some of the original cast, including Gellar, reprise their iconic roles.
In the meantime, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s lighthearted mistake has certainly added a fun layer to the excitement around the upcoming release!
