Scooby-Doo Goes Live-Action on Netflix: Mystery Inc’s Origin Story Gets a Modern Reboot
March 27, 2025: Scooby-Doo is finally going live-action again—this time on Netflix. The streamer has officially greenlit an eight-episode origin story that will explore the spooky beginnings of Mystery Inc., taking fans back to the final summer at camp when four teens and a mysterious Great Dane first crossed paths.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera franchise promises to blend nostalgia with a fresh twist, aimed at both longtime fans and a new generation. Written and showrun by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (of Cowboy Bebop fame), the series will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Riverdale, You), André Nemec, and Jeff Pinkner. The project has been in development since 2024.

The official synopsis teases: “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. As the mystery unfolds, they’re joined by Velma, a skeptical young scientist, and Freddy, the mysterious new kid in camp.”
What begins as a ghost story slowly evolves into the start of the legendary Mystery Inc. gang we know and love.
Netflix’s VP of Scripted Series, Peter Friedlander, described the show as a “groovy adventure for a new era,” calling it a faithful tribute to the original while promising deeper emotional arcs and cinematic visuals.

This isn’t Scooby-Doo’s first venture into live-action. The 2002 Scooby-Doo film starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar was a box office success and spawned a sequel, Monsters Unleashed, in 2004. More recently, the animated reboot Scoob! and the HBO Max series Velma drew mixed responses. However, with Netflix’s track record of revamping beloved properties like One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans are cautiously optimistic.
Executive producer Greg Berlanti noted, “Josh and Scott have crafted a story that respects the genius of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. We’re thrilled to take fans back to where it all began—with a haunting twist.”
Scooby-Doo Live-Action: The Origin Story is expected to begin production soon, with casting announcements on the horizon. Stay tuned for more updates on the gang’s first spooky mystery.
