“Scream 7”: Kevin Williamson Starts Shooting For Horror Film

January 8, 2025: Kevin Williamson is officially back at the helm of the Scream franchise, and the excitement surrounding Scream 7 is palpable! After wrapping up the first day of filming, the writer and producer shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, calling it the “best day” of his life and expressing gratitude to his crew and the late Wes Craven, who shaped the series into what it is today.

Williamson, who penned the script for the original Scream in 1996 and served as the screenwriter and producer for Scream 4 (2011), is returning as a director for the first time in nearly 15 years. His emotional tribute to Craven reflects the deep influence the legendary director had on him and his career. Williamson’s post shows his appreciation for the talented cast and crew who helped make the first day of production a success.

The upcoming Scream 7, which is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026, marks another significant chapter for the iconic slasher series. Alongside Williamson, longtime Scream star Courteney Cox will reprise her role as Gale Weathers, a character she’s famously portrayed since the first film. New cast additions include 1883 star Isabel May, who will play Sidney’s daughter, and a strong ensemble featuring Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp, among others.

"Scream 7": Kevin Williamson Starts Shooting For Horror Film 2

However, Scream 7 will look quite different from its predecessors, due to several major changes behind the scenes. Jenna Ortega, who became a fan-favorite with Scream 5 (2022), won’t be returning, and actor Melissa Barrera was controversially fired, while director Christopher Landon also exited the project. Despite these shifts, Williamson and his team are forging ahead with a fresh vision for the series, which has already seen significant success with Scream 5 and the record-breaking Scream 6 (2023), the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

The Scream series, which was originally brought to life by Wes Craven, has always been known for its clever deconstruction of horror tropes, and with Williamson back in the director’s chair, there’s high anticipation for what Scream 7 will bring to fans. The film’s production is already underway with Williamson, James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment producing.

It’s clear that the legacy of Scream is in good hands with Williamson’s return, and with the blend of old and new talent, the film promises to be an exciting addition to the horror franchise. Fans of the series are already eagerly awaiting what twists and turns the next installment will bring!
