‘Scrubs’ Reboot Officially Confirmed by ABC With Original Cast and Creator Returning
Los Angeles [US], July 11:
After years of speculation and fan anticipation, ABC has officially announced the return of the beloved medical comedy series “Scrubs”, with Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke reprising their iconic roles. Series creator Bill Lawrence will also return to helm the reboot, which is set to air during the 2025–2026 broadcast TV season.
The revival will pick up years after the original series concluded, with former interns JD (Braff) and Turk (Faison) reuniting on the hospital floor once again. According to the network’s official logline, the new season promises:
“Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises along the way.”
Creator Bill Lawrence shared his excitement in a statement issued by ABC:
“Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.”
The revival comes after more than a decade since the show last aired. Originally premiering in October 2001 on NBC, Scrubs ran for eight seasons before shifting to ABC for its ninth and final season, which aired in 2010. By then, several key cast members had reduced their appearances, and the focus shifted toward newer characters.
Although the show had been off the air, its stars have remained closely connected. Braff and Faison co-host the popular rewatch podcast “Fake Doctors, Real Friends”, which has kept the series alive among fans. The duo also appeared together in a series of T-Mobile commercials, further cementing their on-screen chemistry.
Speculation about a potential reboot gained momentum after a 2022 ATX TV Festival panel that featured much of the original cast, including John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins, as well as Bill Lawrence. During the panel, Donald Faison remarked that due to the cast’s busy schedules, a full season might not be feasible, but a movie or limited series was a possibility.
At the time, Braff also confirmed his willingness to return, stating:
“If Bill [Lawrence] does it, I’m in.”
To which Lawrence responded confidently:
“We’re going to do it. You guys know we’re going to do it.”
Scrubs broke ground with its innovative blend of comedy, drama, and surreal fantasy elements, winning over critics and fans alike. Its unique storytelling style and heartfelt moments helped it develop a strong cult following. The series starred:
While the ninth season attempted a soft reboot by introducing new medical students, it lacked the same spark and was ultimately the show’s last—until now.
With the original team back together and fan excitement running high, the Scrubs revival is poised to deliver the nostalgic charm, emotional depth, and absurd comedy that made it one of TV’s most beloved series. As JD and Turk “scrub in” again, audiences can look forward to a fresh chapter at Sacred Heart Hospital, filled with laughter, life lessons, and a whole lot of heart.
