Selena Gomez Discusses Impact Of Body Shaming, Says "It Made Me A Tad Bitter"
March 26, 2025: Selena Gomez has candidly opened up about the negative impact of body shaming, sharing how constant comments about her weight have made her feel “a tad bitter.” In a recent appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast, the actress and singer spoke about the struggles she faces as a result of body image scrutiny, particularly in relation to her fluctuating weight due to her medication.
Gomez, who has been open about living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disorder, explained that her weight shifts as a side effect of the medication she takes to manage the condition. Despite facing judgment from the public, she emphasized that her health comes before societal beauty standards. “I would rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she said, underscoring the importance of her medications and how they are necessary for her well-being.
She also addressed the double standards when it comes to body image discussions, pointing out that women often bear the brunt of these issues. “Everyone has something to say,” Gomez noted, adding that women are disproportionately affected by body image issues. She highlighted the unfairness of such scrutiny, stating, “It’s the character that gets judged… It’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough… nobody cares about those kinds of things with men.”
Despite her frustrations, Gomez clarified that she doesn’t see herself as a victim. Instead, she wants to raise awareness about the unrealistic and unfair expectations placed on women. “I just think it’s made me a tad bitter,” she confessed.
To cope with the constant negativity, Gomez shared that she has learned to avoid social media and focus on her mental health, emphasizing the importance of self-care and prioritizing her well-being.
