Shilpa Shetty, Husband Raj Kundra Booked By Mumbai Police
The celebrity couple has been booked by the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing for allegedly cheating a city-based businessman.
August 14, 2025: Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her businessman husband Raj Kundra have been booked by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police for allegedly cheating a businessman of ₹60.48 crore. The FIR, which also names an unidentified third person, stems from a loan-cum-investment arrangement linked to their now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd.
The complaint was filed by Deepak Kothari, a 60-year-old director of a non-banking financial company. According to the FIR, the Kundras, who at the time held a majority stake in Best Deal TV, allegedly sought a large loan from Kothari. They later advised him to route the funds as an ‘investment’ to avoid higher taxation, reportedly assuring him of fixed returns and repayment of the principal amount.
Kothari claims he transferred ₹60.48 crore in two tranches in 2015. However, he alleges the funds were never returned and were instead diverted. In 2017, he discovered the company was undergoing insolvency proceedings.
Reacting to the development, Prashant Patil, the legal counsel for the Kundras, vehemently denied all allegations. Patil stated that the matter is “purely civil in nature” and has already been adjudicated by the NCLT Mumbai, adding that there is “no criminality involved.” He confirmed that the EOW has been provided with all necessary documents and that the police are conducting further investigation.
