Shoojit Sircar, Vikramaditya Motwane to Present Varun Tandon’s Short Film ‘Thursday Special’
Filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have joined hands to present Thursday Special, a short film by National Award-winning director Varun Tandon. The film is set to release on the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel on January 29.
Billed as a tender exploration of love, companionship, and change, Thursday Special stars Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama as Ram and Shakuntala, an elderly couple united by decades of marriage, shared memories, a love for food, and a cherished Thursday ritual.
Produced by Karan Luthra and written by Varun Tandon, with Krati Tandon as co-writer and executive producer, the film highlights the subtle nuances of middle-age relationships and the everyday magic in ordinary lives.
Shoojit Sircar, known for films like Piku, Vicky Donor, and Sardar Udham, expressed admiration for the short film: “Thursday Special really moved me with its simplicity and gentle storytelling. Varun’s nuanced portrayal of companionship, ageing, and love is heartfelt and mature. The storytelling is clear and sincere, with every department serving the story.” Sircar also noted that the film reminded him of his unreleased feature Shoe Bite, starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Vikramaditya Motwane, director of acclaimed films such as Udaan, Lootera, and Trapped, as well as series Black Warrant and Jubilee, praised the film’s focus on often-overlooked human stories. “Though all the stories we tell are human stories, we tend to forget that there are so many other stories out there in the mundane, and in the lives of people who you would not expect to have unique stories,” he said.
Thursday Special promises to offer an intimate, heartfelt look at love, ageing, and the quiet rituals that shape a lifetime together.
