Simi Garewal, 76, To Make Iconic Cannes Debut for Satyajit Ray Tribute On May-19

The veteran actress will walk the red carpet on May 19 for the Cannes Classics screening of Aranyer Din Ratri, restored by Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson.

Elegance meets legacy as Simi Garewal, the 76-year-old icon of Indian cinema, prepares for her Cannes Film Festival debut this year. The actress will grace the red carpet on May 19, attending the Cannes Classics screening of Aranyer Din Ratri (1970), a film by Satyajit Ray, in which she played a defining role.

The screening is part of Cannes’ ongoing celebration of world cinema restorations, with this edition featuring a newly restored print of the Ray classic. The restoration has been led by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, co-founded by Martin Scorsese, with additional support from Wes Anderson and the Film Heritage Foundation of India.

To mark this momentous occasion, Simi Garewal has chosen Indian couture label Karleo to design her red carpet look. Known for their elegant eveningwear, the label will custom-make a gown for her Cannes debut.

“So I’ve finally decided who will design my ensemble for the red carpet in Cannes!! It’s on 19th May, when we present my film with Ray, Aranyer Din Ratri, restored by Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese & Heritage Foundation,” Garewal shared in a video on X (formerly Twitter). “Because I love their aesthetics… I’ve chosen @karleofashion!”

Her choice of designer and the historic film screening have already generated a wave of excitement among fans and fashion enthusiasts. Many hailed the moment as “iconic” and “timeless.”
