Sisters in War: ‘Cuba & Alaska’ Trailer Debuts Ahead of Sheffield Doc Fest Premiere
June 5, 2025: Java Films has secured the global rights (excluding Ukraine, France, and Belgium) to the powerful new documentary “Cuba & Alaska” just ahead of its world premiere at Sheffield Doc Fest. Directed by Yegor Troyanovsky, the film also dropped its first-look trailer, giving audiences a raw glimpse into life on the frontlines.
The documentary tells the gripping story of two Ukrainian combat medics — nicknamed “Cuba” (Yulia Sidorova) and “Alaska” (Olexandra) — as they navigate the chaos of war with courage, humor, and unbreakable friendship. Shot largely using helmet-mounted GoPros and phone footage, the film provides an intimate and rarely seen perspective of women in conflict zones.

“Cuba & Alaska” will also screen in the Directors’ Week Competition at the Brussels International Film Festival. It is produced by Olha Bregman (2Brave Productions, Ukraine), Christian Popp (Tag Film, France), and Hanne Phlypo (Clin d’Oeil Films, Belgium).
The producers praised Java Films’ Kathryn Bonnici and Donatien Pierda for instantly connecting with the film’s human-centered message at CPH:Forum. “Having a sales agent who truly gets what we’re trying to say about the human side of this conflict means everything to us,” they stated.
To complement the emotional weight of the film, an original soundtrack featuring music by Ukrainian artist Serhiy Zhadan and a score by Frederik van de Moortel will be released on Spotify this Friday.
