‘Sky Force’ Box Office Controversy: Trade Analysts Call Out Alleged ‘Block Booking’ Manipulation

Akshay Kumar’s latest release faces accusations of inflated box office figures with claims of block bookings masking actual audience turnout.

February 4, 2025: Akshay Kumar’s latest film, Sky Force, hailed as his first profitable project in three years, is under scrutiny for alleged box office figure inflation. The film, which marked the debut of Veer Pahariya, reportedly earned ₹80 crore in its first week and crossed ₹100 crore according to official reports. However, trade analysts suggest that these numbers may not reflect actual ticket sales.

According to Screen, trade insider Komal Nahta has claimed that a significant portion of the earnings was attributed to “block bookings” or “self-buying” tactics rather than organic audience turnout. According to him, the movie’s actual first-week collection was only ₹40.50 crore, with inflated figures stemming from unsold tickets being block-booked to create an illusion of extraordinary performance.

“The total for the first week was ₹40.50 crore,” wrote Nahta. “Records show ₹80 crore due to heavy block booking of unsold tickets every single day of the first week. This might be the largest instance of block bookings in Bollywood history. Cinemas appeared housefull on platforms like BookMyShow, but auditoriums were nearly empty,” he added on filminformation.com.

Alleged Distributor Role

Nahta also highlighted the involvement of cinema chains, particularly PVR Inox, in facilitating these block bookings, as the chain also served as the film’s all-India distributor.

What Are Block Seats?

The practice of block booking, also referred to as “corporate booking” or “self-buying,” involves purchasing large numbers of tickets to inflate box office figures artificially. While some tickets are distributed to schools, colleges, or corporate entities to give the appearance of audience attendance, many seats remain unfilled.

Industry Response

The controversy has reignited discussions about transparency in Bollywood’s box office numbers. Industry insiders note that while such tactics have been employed in the past, they damage the credibility of box office tracking.

Despite the allegations, Sky Force continues its theatrical run, albeit under a cloud of doubt over its actual performance.
