Sobhita Dhulipala Praises Controversial Tamil Film ‘Bad Girl’

Actress Gets Emotional After Watching the Anjali Sivaraman Starrer, Calling it a Film “For Us Y’all”

Actor Sobhita Dhulipala has given a heartfelt and glowing review of the Tamil coming-of-age drama, Bad Girl, which is currently streaming on JioHotstar. The film, directed by debutante Varsha Bharath and starring Anjali Sivaraman in the lead, ran into significant controversy earlier this year.

Sharing her review on Instagram Stories, the Made in Heaven star praised the film’s emotional depth and relatability.

Sobhita’s Review: “I Feel Seen”

Sobhita Dhulipala revealed that the film resonated deeply with her, making her both smile and cry.

Bad Girl had me smirking AND tearing up. I feel seen. Beheld. ❤️ A film that ripens by the minute. Heavily recommend to everyone especially the girls. This one’s for us y’all. Shout out to @varsha.bharath3 and @anjalisivaraman you guys are simply beyond 🎊. Watch it on JioHotstar.”

Bad Girl was released theatrically on September 5, 2025, and made its digital debut on JioHotstar on November 4, 2025.

The Controversy Surrounding the Film

The movie, which follows the life of a young woman named Ramya as she navigates societal expectations and conservative family life, sparked a major controversy after its trailer release in January.

Director G. Mohan publicly slammed the film’s producers, Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap, alleging that the movie negatively stereotyped and “bashing Brahmin father and mother is old and not trendy.” He suggested they portray other communities instead. The controversy centered on the protagonist being a young woman from a Tamil Brahmin family whose life choices—including relationships, drinking, and smoking—are shown in the film, leading to strong backlash from conservative sections of the audience.

Despite the outrage, the film received critical praise, including the prestigious NETPAC Award at its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).
