Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra made a high-profile appearance before the Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Privileges Committee on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in response to a breach of privilege motion.

The controversy centers on his satirical song, ‘Thane Ki Rickshaw’, which targets Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During the deposition, Kamra remained firm, asserting that he had committed no wrongdoing and that the song was a legitimate form of professional satire and creative expression.

The hearing, chaired by MLC Prasad Lad, saw a direct confrontation between Kamra and BJP MLC Pravin Darekar, who originally moved the motion. Since the proceedings were conducted in Marathi, Kamra utilized a translator to navigate the legal complexities. While the committee suggested an unconditional apology, Kamra deferred his response, stating that he would reply through his legal counsel. Chairman Lad noted that while the comedian was “polite” throughout the process, the legislature has requested additional documents before deciding whether the satire constitutes a genuine breach of legislative privilege.

This legal drama unfolds against a backdrop of shifting political and cultural dynamics in India. On the same day, Shiv Sena-UBT MP Arvind Sawant dismissed rumors of defection, reaffirming his loyalty to Uddhav Thackeray, while the hearing for fellow party member Sushma Andhare was deferred due to her illness.
