Actor clarifies intent after ‘misconception’ comment amid cheque bounce case
March 3, 2026: Actor Sonu Sood has responded to Rajpal Yadav after the latter asked people to “get over the misconception” that he needs work. Earlier, Sonu had offered Rajpal a role in his film and suggested that producers sign him with an advance payment, saying a “small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, but dignity.” Clarifying his stance to HT City, Sonu said he never implied Rajpal was seeking work, but only encouraged the industry to support him with advance payments because he deserves it.
Rajpal, in an interview with Screen, maintained that he has consistently received work and does not need to ask for opportunities. He added that there is no shame in seeking work, but emphasised that cinema is his passion and that projects have continued to come his way. The exchange comes amid Rajpal’s ongoing Rs 9 crore cheque bounce case, in which he was granted interim bail until March 18 to attend a family wedding in Shahjahanpur. His earlier emotional statement before surrendering at Tihar Jail, where he said he “doesn’t have any money,” had drawn public attention.
After his release, Rajpal struck a more confident note, calling himself a “Rs 1500 crore man” and listing his upcoming projects. These include Bhoot Bangla, Welcome to the Jungle, and Haiwaan, along with two web series and other films yet to be announced. The episode has sparked debate within the industry about dignity, perception and professional solidarity.
