January 20, 2025: Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has made a successful transition into directing with his debut film Fateh, which hit theatres on January 10, 2025. This high-octane action thriller, inspired by real-life cybercrime incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic, has garnered attention for its compelling narrative and intense action sequences.

Sood discussed his journey as a filmmaker, particularly his decision to venture into the action genre for his first directorial project. He also shared his enriching experience working with the legendary Naseeruddin Shah.

Sood expressed deep admiration for Shah, recalling how their collaboration has been a learning experience for him. Having worked with Shah previously as an actor in Maximum, Sood described the veteran as an institution in himself. “Naseer sir’s discipline and approach to cinema are incredible. He brings a unique depth to every scene he is part of,” said Sood. He highlighted Shah’s improvisational skills, noting how the actor’s ability to add weight and nuance to the movie elevated its storytelling. “The way Naseer ji improvises, he brings a whole new layer to the character and justifies every line with his own understanding,” Sood added.

The director also shared that his decision to pursue filmmaking was driven by his own experiences as an actor. “As an actor, I often thought, ‘I wish the director had pushed me further in a scene,’ or ‘I wish I had a dialogue that I could deliver in my own style,'” he explained. This desire to create a more personal connection with the material led him to make Fateh.

Sood also spoke about the action sequences in the film, acknowledging that action has always been his forte. “Bollywood’s action doesn’t quite match up to Hollywood standards,” he admitted, but assured that Fateh was crafted with love, hard work, and honesty. He emphasized that the film was not filled with traditional Bollywood masala but instead featured music and sequences that fit the narrative and added to the emotional intensity of the story.

When discussing the success of a film, Sood emphasized the need for a balance between box office performance, audience reception, and critical acclaim. He shared his belief that while box office numbers are important for motivating producers, critical acclaim is just as crucial for catering to those who seek intelligent cinema. “Right efforts always pay off,” he concluded, acknowledging that while success and failure are beyond a director’s control, the effort put into a film is what truly matters.

Fateh stands out for its impressive action choreography, executed by international stunt director Lee Whittaker, known for his work on Captain Marvel and Fast & Furious 5. The film also features a star-studded cast, including Jacqueline Fernandez, Vijay Raaz, and Naseeruddin Shah, and showcases stunning international locations like Istanbul, Dubai, and the United States.

With its gripping storyline, thrilling action, and Sood’s heartfelt direction, Fateh has already made a strong impact on audiences and critics alike.
