Veteran filmmaker Sooraj R Barjatya has added another feather to his cap, winning the prestigious Best Director award for his film Uunchai at the 70th National Film Awards. The awards, which honor the best cinematic achievements of 2022, were announced on Friday in the national capital. In addition to Barjatya’s accolade, Neena Gupta won the Best Supporting Actress award for her stellar performance in the same film.
The jury for this year’s National Film Awards included prominent figures such as Rahul Rawail, Chairperson of the Feature Film Jury; Nila Madhab Panda, Chairperson of the Non-Feature Film Jury; and Gangadhar Mudalair, Chairperson of the Best Writing on Cinema Jury. Their expertise ensured that Uunchai received the recognition it deserved for its unique and heartfelt storytelling.
Uunchai is a moving tale that delves into the themes of friendship, aging, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds. The film centers around the characters played by Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, and Anupam Kher, lifelong friends who embark on an ambitious journey to fulfill a dream that binds them together. The story takes a poignant turn when Danny Denzongpa’s character, a central figure in their circle, passes away before they can embark on their planned adventure. In a touching tribute to their late friend, the remaining members decide to carry out his wish by attempting to summit Mount Everest and scattering his ashes there.
The journey is not just a physical challenge but also an emotional odyssey, as they confront their fears, insecurities, and the realities of aging. The film also features Parineeti Chopra as a determined and supportive trainer who prepares the friends for their daunting task. Neena Gupta and Sarika play significant roles in the story, providing companionship and strength to the group as they navigate the treacherous climb.
Barjatya’s direction brings out the deep emotional connections between the characters, making Uunchai a compelling and inspiring narrative about the power of friendship and the human spirit. The film’s success at the National Film Awards marks a triumphant return for Sooraj R Barjatya, who last directed the 2015 family drama Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, starring Salman Khan, Sonam Kapoor, and Anupam Kher.
Uunchai stands out not only for its heartfelt story but also for its exceptional performances, particularly that of Neena Gupta, whose portrayal of a supportive and resilient character earned her the Best Supporting Actress award. Her nuanced performance added depth to the film’s exploration of relationships and personal growth.
As Uunchai continues to receive accolades, it is clear that Sooraj R Barjatya’s ability to craft deeply resonant stories remains unmatched. His work on Uunchai is a testament to his enduring legacy in Indian cinema, as he continues to create films that touch the heart and inspire audiences.
