Celebrating 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the iconic pair unveiled the bronze statue of Raj and Simran at London’s prestigious Leicester Square.

December 5, 2025: The timeless romance of Raj and Simran from the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) has been immortalized in the heart of London. Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a bronze statue of their legendary characters at Leicester Square today, celebrating 30 years since the film’s initial release.

Shah Rukh Khan took to social media to share the exciting news and a picture of himself and Kajol posing in front of the statue, quoting a famous line from the film: “Bade Bade Deshon Mein, Aisi Chhoti Chhoti Baatein Hoti Rehti Hain, Senorita!

First Indian Film Honoured

The statue is a significant milestone for Indian cinema, marking the first time an Indian film has been honored with a permanent sculpture in London’s prestigious ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail.

SRK expressed his excitement: “Thrilled to unveil the bronze statue of Raj & Simran at London’s Leicester Square today, celebrating 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)! Incredibly delighted that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be honoured with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail.”

Kajol shared the sentiment at the launch event, saying, “Watching the statue being unveiled in London felt like reliving a piece of our history – a story that has truly travelled across generations,” as reported by Variety.

The unveiling ceremony was also attended by Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani and Heart of London Business Alliance CEO Ros Morgan.

The Legacy of DDLJ

Released on October 20, 1995, and filmed mostly in London and Switzerland, Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut became a global cultural phenomenon. The romantic drama tells the story of two young Indians living in Europe, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol), who fall in love during a continental trip. The plot centers on Raj’s mission to win over Simran’s stern, traditionalist father, Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri).

The film, which explored themes of love, family values, and cultural customs, is widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s most cherished and enduring romances.
