Cillian Murphy takes on a new complex role in a powerful drama based on the novel ‘Shy.’ The film, also starring Jay Lycurgo, is set to premiere in theaters before its global Netflix release.
August 14, 2025: The official trailer for the next movie Steve was out on Wednesday. Cillian Murphy, who won an Oscar for his role in the movie, will provide another great performance. Tim Mielants directed the drama, which is based on Max Porter’s 2023 book, Shy.

The movie is about a very important day in the life of Steve (Murphy), the headmaster, who is trying to keep his last-chance reform school from closing. Steve has to deal with his kids’ problems, such the unstable youngster Shy (played by Jay Lycurgo), while also dealing with his own mental health issues. The movie’s summary says that the two characters’ stories run parallel to each other. Shy tries to find a way to deal with his fragile nature and his desire to hurt himself.
The trailer, which was posted on Netflix’s official Instagram account, gives a stressful and dramatic look at the movie. It also has a great cast, including Tracey Ullman, Simni Ajikawo, and Emily Watson among them.
Steve is Murphy’s first project with Mielants since they worked together on the 2024 movie Small Things Like These and Season 3 of Peaky Blinders. Murphy has also worked with writer Max Porter before. He was in a stage version of Porter’s 2015 book Grief Is the Thing With Feathers.
Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow wrote the music for the movie, which was directed by Porter and written by him. Alan Moloney, Murphy, and Tina Pawlik made Steve, which will have its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. On September 19, the movie will come out in some theaters. Then, on October 3, it will be available to everyone on Netflix.
