Chennai: The much-anticipated reunion of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in Thalaivar 173 has hit a major setback even before production could begin. Director Sundar C, who was announced as the film’s director earlier this month, has officially opted out of the project, citing “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.”
The announcement came through an official statement shared by Sundar’s wife Khushbu Sundar on social media, which was later deleted. The statement has since gone viral after being reposted by several users on X (formerly Twitter).
“It is with a heavy heart that I share some important news with you. Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project Thalaivar 173,” Sundar C wrote in his statement.
He further expressed gratitude and admiration for both cinema legends:
“My association with these two icons goes back a long way, and I will always hold them in the highest regard. The special moments we have shared over the past few days will be cherished forever. They have taught me invaluable lessons, and I will continue to seek their inspiration and wisdom as I move forward.”
Sundar also extended an apology to the actors and fans:
“Although I am stepping away from this opportunity, I shall continue to seek their expert guidance. I thank both of them from the bottom of my heart for considering me for this magnum opus. Please accept my sincere apologies if this news has disappointed those who had eagerly anticipated this venture.”
The filmmaker ended on a hopeful note, promising to deliver more entertainment in the future:
“Thank you for your unwavering support and understanding. It means the world to me, and I look forward to creating more memories with you all.”
The collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan—two of Tamil cinema’s greatest icons—was announced earlier this month by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI). However, with Sundar C’s sudden exit, the director’s position remains vacant, and an official replacement has yet to be announced.
Kamal Haasan was last seen in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life and is currently working on an unannounced project, while Rajinikanth’s next release is Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie.
