Sunny Deol Welcomes Varun Dhawan to ‘Border 2’ Battalion

In an exciting development for fans of Indian cinema, actor Sunny Deol has officially introduced Varun Dhawan as “Fauji” in the much-anticipated war film Border 2. The announcement, made via social media, has left fans eagerly awaiting the sequel to the iconic 1997 film Border.

Sunny Deol took to Instagram on Friday to share an introduction video of Varun Dhawan, accompanied by the patriotic song “Sandese Aate Hai,” originally sung by Sonu Nigam for the first Border film. Sharing the video, Deol wrote, “Welcoming Fauji @varundvn to the Battalion of #Border2.”

Varun Dhawan also expressed his excitement about joining the project. He shared his sentiments on Instagram, recalling how the original Border film had a lasting impact on him. “I was just a kid in class four when I went to Chandan cinema and saw Border. And it made such a big impact. I still remember the sense of national pride we all felt in the hall,” Varun wrote. He added, “J P Dutta sir’s war epic remains one of my most favorite movies to this day. To play a part in Border 2 produced by J P sir and Bhushan Kumar is a very, very special moment in my career. And I get to work with Sunny Paaji, my hero, which makes it all the more special.”

Recently, on the 27th anniversary of the cult classic Border, the filmmakers surprised fans by announcing the sequel, Border 2. Sunny Deol shared an announcement video, where he said, “27 saal pehle ek fauji ne vada kiya tha ki vo vapas aayega. Ussi vaade ko poora karne, Hindustan ki mitti ko apna salaam kehne, aa raha hai.” (Twenty-seven years ago, a soldier made a promise that he would return. To fulfill that promise, to salute the soil of India, he is coming).

In his post, Deol wrote, “Ek fauji apne 27 saal purane waade ko pura karne, aa raha hai phirse. India’s biggest war film, #Border2.” Border 2 is being produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, with direction by Anurag Singh. The story, reportedly set during the same Battle of Longewala as the original, will begin shooting in October this year.

Border 2 is set for a grand release on January 23, 2026. The film is presented by Gulshan Kumar, T-Series, and JP Dutta’s J.P. Films. With the legacy of the first Border film, which starred Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, and Akshaye Khanna, the sequel is expected to be one of India’s biggest war films.

Meanwhile, Sunny Deol, fresh off the success of Gadar 2, is gearing up for his next project, Lahore 1947. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, the film features an ensemble cast including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol, and is slated for a Republic Day release next year.
