November 24, 2024: Suriya’s much-anticipated epic fantasy film Kanguva was poised to be one of the largest box office spectacles of 2024. However, the movie’s underwhelming performance at the ticket counter has left both fans and producers stunned. With a massive budget of over ₹300 crores, the film’s earnings have fallen drastically short of expectations, positioning it to surpass Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam as Kollywood’s most significant box office disaster.
Directed by Siva, Kanguva had an impressive opening, amassing ₹24 crores net on its first day in India and ₹40 crores gross worldwide. However, the initial momentum was short-lived. Negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth saw the film’s earnings plummet, with India’s day-seven collections dwindling to just ₹2.43 crores across all languages.
In its first week, Kanguva managed to rake in ₹96.66 crores worldwide. While early predictions anticipated a lifetime collection between ₹400-500 crores, industry analysts now estimate that the movie might struggle to surpass the ₹150-crore mark globally.
According to reports from Track Tollywood, Kanguva is now en route to becoming Kollywood’s biggest box office disaster. With losses projected to exceed ₹150 crores, producers UV Creations and Studio Green are likely to suffer even greater setbacks than the ₹120 crores endured by Radhe Shyam.
The shocking turn of events is a hard pill to swallow for Suriya fans, who were confident the actor’s presence would propel the film to significant milestones. Instead, the epic fantasy has left a lasting mark as one of South Indian cinema’s costliest failures.
Prabhas’ 2022 period drama Radhe Shyam was previously considered the biggest financial failure in South Indian cinema, with losses pegged at ₹120 crores. However, Kanguva has reportedly surpassed this figure, earning the dubious distinction of being the most loss-making film in Kollywood’s history.
Amidst the fallout, rumors suggest that Suriya has stepped forward to help mitigate the financial blow. Reports indicate the actor has offered to collaborate with Studio Green on another project at a reduced fee to ease the burden on producers.
In response to the disaster, the production houses are also rumored to be planning a low-budget venture, aiming to minimize risks and recoup losses in their next outing.
While Kanguva had all the ingredients of a blockbuster — from Suriya’s star power to a grand budget — its fate serves as a reminder that box office success is never guaranteed.
