October 17, 2024: Netflix’s new documentary Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare is a gripping exploration of a real-life catfishing scheme, based on a podcast that shook listeners with its tale of online deception. The documentary focuses on Kirat Assi, a woman who was ensnared in a virtual romance with a man named Bobby Jandu for nearly a decade, only to discover that everything she thought she knew was a lie.
Without revealing too much, let us in brief talk about the premise of the film. The story begins in 2009 when Kirat, a London-based marketing professional, receives a Facebook friend request from Bobby Jandu, a cardiology assistant. Bobby seemed trustworthy; his family was well-known within the Kenyan Punjabi Sikh community, and they shared many mutual friends online. Plus, Bobby’s younger brother was dating Kirat’s cousin, Simran. What began as an innocent online friendship soon turned into a romantic relationship and eventually an engagement. But the truth behind Bobby’s identity was far darker than Kirat could have imagined.

Sweet Bobby recounts this decade-long ordeal, using a first-person narrative from Kirat herself, as well as re-enactments of the digital exchanges between her and Bobby. They communicated through Facebook, WhatsApp, and Skype, with Bobby supposedly recovering from various tragedies, including a shooting and a stroke. All of this built a believable, yet entirely false, narrative that Kirat fell deeply into.
The documentary, co-produced with Tortoise Media, keeps viewers hooked as it unravels the layers of lies and deception. It highlights how easy it was for someone to manipulate Kirat for so long, weaving a web of half-truths and fabricated details that consumed the prime years of her life. The emotional and psychological toll on Kirat becomes clear as she recounts her experiences.
Shows Similar to Sweet Bobby:
Sweet Bobby has elements similar to shows like Dirty John and Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist. These shows also delve into real-life tales of deception and manipulation, where the victims are caught in webs of lies for years. In particular, Kirat’s experience mirrors that of Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o, who was famously catfished by someone pretending to be his girlfriend, only to find out that she never existed.
Our Take on Sweet Bobby:
While Sweet Bobby is an 82-minute film that tells a compelling story, at times it feels like there are missing pieces. The challenge of condensing nearly a decade of catfishing into a concise film is evident, as certain details are glossed over, making Kirat seem more gullible than she truly was. Viewers may be left wanting more insight into why the cat fisher did what they did and the possible dynamics around it. Why would they go through such pains and spend hours and hours everyday spinning an intricate web of lies and deceit.
Also, the documentary hints at some answers but doesn’t delve as deeply into the psychological aspects of the case as one might hope.
The film circumvents some lingering questions about accountability. Though Kirat brought a civil case against the cat fisher, which was settled out of court in 2022, the documentary fails to explore the consequences for those involved in the scam in more detail. There is also little speculation about why this particular scam was carried out and how it went on for so long without detection.
However, despite these limitations, Sweet Bobby remains an unsettling and poignant reminder of how vulnerable people can be to online deception. The film ends with a call for legal reform around catfishing and digital fraud, and though the resolution feels incomplete, the emotional weight of Kirat’s story lingers long after the credits roll.
But all in all its a true eye opener! And tts a must watch from our side.
