Sydney Sweeney Teams Up with Michael Bay for Sega’s ‘OutRun’ Movie Adaptation

The ‘Euphoria’ star will produce Universal Pictures’ film version of the iconic 1986 arcade racing game, with Michael Bay set to direct.

Washington DC | April 22:
Actress and producer Sydney Sweeney is set to bring Sega’s classic arcade game ‘OutRun’ to life in a feature film for Universal Pictures, according to a report by Variety. The project will be directed by blockbuster filmmaker Michael Bay, best known for the Transformers franchise.

The film is being developed under Universal’s first-look deal with Platinum Dunes, with Bay and Brad Fuller producing. Jayson Rothwell, writer of Polar, will pen the screenplay. Sega Corporation COO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.

🎮 A Retro Racing Classic Hits the Big Screen

Originally released in 1986, OutRun is one of Sega’s most iconic arcade titles. Known for its bright visuals, open-road racing format, and synth-heavy soundtrack, the game became a pioneer in the driving genre and even inspired a distinct electronic music subgenre called OutRun. The game’s global popularity led to numerous sequels and home console versions, making it a lasting part of gaming history.

While plot details for the adaptation are being kept under wraps, the film is expected to lean into the fast-paced, stylized racing and road-trip vibes that defined the original.

🎬 Universal’s Gaming Universe Expands

Universal continues its winning streak in game-to-film adaptations, following the massive successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.4B) and Five Nights at Freddy’s ($290M). The OutRun adaptation is set to expand the studio’s growing roster of high-profile video game-based blockbusters.

🌟 What’s Next for Sydney Sweeney

Fresh off recent film successes and a producing role in Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney is also set to return as Cassie in the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, slated for release in 2026. Season 2 ended with emotional upheavals, including the tragic death of fan-favorite Ashtray and the unresolved fate of Fezco, played by the late Angus Cloud.
